Te Puna Reo o Te Waonui a Tāne

No matter your whakapapa or where your journey into Te Ao Māori begins, all who enter our puna are welcomed, valued, and supported as part of this growing ecosystem. Our kaiako (teachers) create an atmosphere where tamariki and whānau feel a sense of belonging. This inclusiveness and celebration of diversity is at the heart of our kaupapa.

We welcome children aged 0 to 6 years. Our centre and team support each child at every stage, ensuring they receive meaningful care as well as personalised learning and development to prepare them for their pathway to kura (school).

At Te Puna Reo o Te Waonui a Tāne, we see our learning community as a living ngahere. Tamariki are the seeds, each full of mana and potential. Whānau are the rich soil, grounding these seeds in whakapapa, aroha, and identity. Kaiako are the nurturers, offering mātauranga, care, and guidance so each seed can flourish.

At Te Puna Reo o Te Waonui a Tāne, our programme is grounded in Te Ara Māori, a distinctive te ao Māori pathway within Te Whāriki the early childhood curriculum, which is built from te ao Māori foundations. Through the medium of te reo Māori, we offer rich and varied learning experiences that nurture the holistic development of every tamaiti.

Our kaupapa celebrates te reo and tikanga Māori, recognising their vital role in revitalisation and fostering a strong sense of cultural identity and belonging. We aim to empower whānau to grow in their bicultural confidence, while supporting tamariki to develop social, cultural, and spiritual awareness.

Nature plays a central role in our learning journey. Tamariki are encouraged to build a deep, respectful relationship with Papatūānuku and other atua through play and exploration, learning the values of kaitiakitanga - guardianship of our natural world.

We believe in the power of learning through experience. Tamariki are supported to make choices, take the lead in their play, and discover the world around them in their own time. Care moments - nappy changing, kai, dressing, and sleep, are embraced as precious times for one-on-one connection and learning.

Our approach is peaceful and respectful, grounded in the belief that each pēpi and tamaiti is unique, capable, and full of potential. With love, care and encouragement, we support them to grow with confidence, security, and a strong sense of self.

Our values are lived every day through the way we care for one another, build relationships, and honour identity. We are guided by manaakitanga, whanaungatanga, kaitiakitanga, and aroha — values that uphold the mana of each individual and strengthen our collective. Te reo Māori is central to our daily life, a living taonga that connects us to our tūpuna and nourishes our mahi like sunlight and rain. Through playful, holistic learning, we nurture confidence, curiosity, and pride in every tamaiti.

We draw from the mātauranga of our tūpuna through reo, waiata, pūrākau, and connection with Papatūānuku, weaving together the voices of the past, present, and future to grow a sense of belonging that transcends time.
Our puna is a whare wānanga, a place of transformation, grounded in real relationships with people and place. As tamariki grow within Te Waonui a Tāne, they are supported to explore, discover, and take pride in who they are, standing tall and confident in their reo, their tikanga, and their role as future kaitiaki for Te Ao Māori.

Ko tō mātou puna he whare wānanga, he whare whakaumu, ko tōna tūāpapa ko ngā hononga pūmau ki ngā tāngata me ngā wāhi.

We are proud to be a pouaka kai (lunch box) centre. This promotes independence as well as encourages self-help skills in preparation for kura.  We encourage families to make healthy food choices and ensure their child’s pouaka kai (lunch box) meets centre guidelines as well as Ministry of Health criteria for Early Learning Services.

We provide a child-focused programme based on the principles, strands and goals of Te Whāriki- Early Childhood Education curriculum guidelines.

We provide tamariki with opportunities for a wide variety of learning experiences through the medium of Te Reo Māori.

Our focus on te reo and tikanga Māori is an endeavour to revitalise the te reo Māori as well as to promote and encourage the social, cultural and spiritual awareness of whānau so they are empowered to be biculturally competent.

We also have a strong focus on nature education and ensuring we teach our tamariki the values of kaitiakitanga of Papatuanuku.

A tamaiti who learns through their own experience gains a type of knowledge that is different from one who is provided with ready-made solutions.

Our tamariki are encouraged to make choices and explore the world on their own terms, with guidance and support from their caregivers. Special attention is also given to their caregiving routines, such as feeding, nappy changing, dressing, and sleeping. These moments are seen as valuable opportunities for tamariki to have quality, one-on-one interactions with their caregiver.

At Te Puna Reo o Te Waonui a Tāne, we embrace peaceful and respectful caregiving methods that honour each pēpi/tamaiti as unique and capable, empowering them to grow secure and self-confident.

Testimonials

“As a Pākehā parent of tamariki Māori, Puna Reo played a really important part in helping me learn tikanga, kupu, and waiata so I could bring more Te Ao Māori into our home. Our tamariki finished Puna able to fully understand and kōrero in te reo Māori.

Pūrākau, waiata, and Te Ao Māori are part of how they now interpret the world. The kaiako engaged with each of our tamariki, meeting them where they were at, helping them discover and own who they are, and encouraging their interests.

The Puna Reo kaiako, and their way of engaging with our tamariki, enabled them, through safety and support, to become independent, curious, and confident.”

Whānau Feedback

“Puna supported our whānau as we began our te reo Māori haerenga ourselves. Having whakapapa but not the reo was not a barrier for Puna. Becoming part of the Puna whānau increased our comfort and ability to use te reo Māori in our whare and out in the world.”

Whānau Feedback

“The kids are kind, and there are lots of fun things like arts and crafts at Puna. There are fun things to play with.”

Whānau Feedback

“Our son absolutely thrived at Te Puna Reo o Te Waonui a Tāne. When we started, we were nervous about settling our young boy into a new space, but our worries were very quickly eased as we got to know the amazing kaiako. They treated all tamariki with respect, manaakitanga, and aroha, and were extremely adaptable to our routines and our son’s needs.

We always heard waiata, karakia, and reo being spoken and encouraged with the tamariki. We loved the different skills and backgrounds each teacher brought, and how inclusive they were with all whānau.

There was always a fantastic range of activities available including clay, drawing, sand, safe water play, and paint (which surely took a lot of energy to clean up!). The learning stories provided by the kaiako were always a welcome email in our inbox, and hearing about our son’s development and what he had been up to was such a wonderful way to stay connected to his days.

We highly recommend this provider of education and care for your tamariki.”

Whānau Feedback

"We feel incredibly fortunate to have our toddler at this Puna Reo. From the moment he started, the kaiako have been warm, caring, and attentive, helping him build strong bonds with both the kaiako and other tamariki. He settled in so quickly, which really speaks to the welcoming and supportive environment they create.

Our son loves waiata and is always happy when he arrives and the kaiako are jamming together. We’ve noticed him getting really into his kanikani at home (me te tākaro ukulele). He also thrives in the outdoor play spaces—exploring, learning, and having fun (ina koa te tākaro pōro!).

This year, we’ve seen his language skills flourish. He’s using more kupu Māori every day, and it’s so special to hear te reo becoming a natural part of his play and communication (even if it’s often “Kao!”).

We are deeply grateful for the aroha, creativity, and dedication of the kaiako. Thank you for providing such a nurturing kaupapa Māori space where our boy can learn, grow, and feel at home."
